Lark and Larkling Rides to High Legh

Maths Exam Question 1

Six (6) cyclists depart from South Park in Macclesfield to ride to High Legh Garden Centre, a journey of 22.9 miles. They agree to ride in two groups of three (3). Rider C1 in Group 1 (known as ‘The Larks’) punctures at 7.5 miles and uses his mobile telephone to call Riders C2 and S1 back to assist him, leaving Riders G, S2 and S3 in Group 2 (known as ‘The Larklings’) to proceed as planned. The Group 1 riders replace the damaged inner tube of Rider C1 at no slower than average speed for riders of their age, experience, manual dexterity, strength and problem solving abilities.

Estimate, to the nearest integer, the number of baked beans consumed by Rider S3 by the time the riders of Group 1 arrive at High Legh Garden Centre. You may assume an average overall journey speed for Group 1 of 14.3 mph and must make any reasonable assumptions about the average speed of Group 2 that you see fit having examined all the available evidence in exhibits 1 and 2 below.
