Closed road hill climb on Beeston Brow, Bollington

Bank Holiday Monday, 27 May 2019

This is the closing event of the 2019 Bollington Festival. We’re reviving the event that we last ran during the 2000 Festival.

Come and experience closed road racing up this brute of a climb. We’re expecting a good crowd of Festival-goers to witness this spectacle of pain! The event will be run under Cycling Time Trials rules (Club event).

About the climb

Beeston Brow is steep and cobbled at the start, with an early tricky right-hand bend, followed by a second steep section of tarmac with an uneven surface, before the gradient eases on Long Lane for the remainder of the climb, with a total length of around 0.8 miles.

Men’s record: 2:55 Chris Quin (Macclesfield Wheelers)
Women’s record: 4:08 Monica Eden (Macclesfield Wheelers)

Entry and HQ / sign-on

Competition restricted to members of cycling clubs only.

Entry on the day only at the HQ. £5 per rider.

HQ: Forecourt of the Bridgend Centre, 104 Palmerston Street, Bollington, Macclesfield, SK10 5PW.

Bollington Scouts are providing refreshments, including cakes. Please eat generously.
Once we’ve accounted for the prizes, we’re donating all proceeds from this event to the Bollington Festival charity as a thank you for its considerable help and support.

Start

First rider off at 2.01pm. The start line will be on the cobbles at the start of Beeston Brow, just opposite the HQ.

Prizes

There will be prizes for fastest male and female, veteran male and female, and junior male and female.

Road closures

The following roads will be closed from 12.30 pm to 4.00 pm.

  • Beeston Brow and Long Lane.

  • Part of Palmerston Street, where the HQ is located, between High Street and Water Street.

This means you will not be able to drive to the HQ.

Parking

Please allow plenty of time to find a parking place. Bollington is a small village with narrow roads, and parking is very limited.

The below map shows some suggested areas for parking, but other Festival events means that space will be limited. If you park on the road please do so respectfully.

Thank you

We’re very grateful for the help and support of the Bollington Festival, in particular Jon Beck, Roland Edwards and Tim Marten; and to David Naylor and Peter Clare of Bollington Town Council. Also thanks to Tullis Russell for allowing us to use their car park.

Entirely run by volunteers and supported by donations and grants, the Bollington Festival is a registered charity and can only happen because of the support of the community. It is thought to be the only festival run in this way in the whole of the UK.

The 2019 festival runs from Friday 10 May until Monday 27 May and features art, music, comedy, opera, crafts and much more! You can buy tickets to separate events on the website below, all the money from ticket sales goes into paying for the festival and any surplus goes into the fund for the next festival.
